Uses of Benzoin

Benzoin(Lohbdan or Loban) is an oleoresing and is commonly used for fumigation.
It is good a natural deodorant. For medicinal purposes it is dissolved
in alcohol( Tincture benzoin). This tincture is used as dressing for superficial
wounds (it forms a protective layer on the skin) because of powerful antiseptic
property. It is a stimulant and helps in emotional exhaustion, tension
and in respiratory problems. It acidifies the urine. It is antifungal
and is used in healing fungal infection, particularly in the case of athlete’s
foot by external application. It is a good preservative for most of crèmes,
herbal extracts and tinctures. Camphor is hot in effect. It dilates blood
vessels so it is used for relief in pain in the form of camphor liniment,
which can be prepared by mixing 2 gm camphor in 30 ml cod liver oil or
almond oil. This liniment allays itching and can be used in eczema of
genitals. When taken internally, camphor helps in digestive problems like
constipation, flatulence and gastroenteritis. It is also useful in depression.
General debility and shock. It dilates blood vessel, stimulates the heart,
and acts just like alcohol. In small doses it gives a sense of mental
comfort and moderate degree of stimulation. It is a rubefacient and slightly
analgesic. In bigger doaazes it is very toxic and may cause death from
respiratory failure.
