HERBAL ANTIOXIDANTS

Recent researches have shown that we can minimize the damage by free radical by dietary and other supplements of key nutrient to bolster the body’s defenses as they weaken with age. Free radical damage is part of ageing process. Life span of a man is directly related to their ability to repair free radical damage. The good cholesterol (HDL) benefits the body because it acts as antioxidant to prevent free radicals from damaging arterial walls and cholesterol filled plaques. These free radicals can be made inert by trapping in the compounds called scavengers, contained in the Ayurvedic herbls given blelow:

Amla

It is excellent because of phenolic compounds contained in it. It may lbe used in the form of Chavanprasha.

Ashwagandha

The effect of this root was evaluated for lipid peroxidation in stress. The herb was found to have a very good anti-oxidant activity, which may in part explain the anti-stress, cognition facilitating, anti-inflammatory and anti-ageing effects of this herb.

Bhuiamla

It inhibits lipid peroxide formation and has free radical scavenging propertyl.

Green Tea

Catechin polyphenols present in tea are potent anti-oxidants, which shield our systems against the damaging effects of ultraviolet\solar radiation, and save blood cholesterol from oxidative damage, thereby protecting artery walls. Tea may prevent strokes, due to quercetin also. The anti-oxidant polyphenols in tea are oxidized during the production of black tea, and thus reduce herb’s anti-oxidant potential. Unlike green tea there is no evidence that black tea protects against stomach, colon, lung or breast cancer.

Khairsar

It stabilizes the cell membrane, and protects the tissue structure even in viral lhepatitis.

Milathi

The anti-oxidant present in the root stops cholesterol build-up in arteries that contributes to arteriosclerosis by delaying oxidation and by making low density lipoprotein more resistant to oxidation.

Vidari Kand

The isoflavonoids from the root were able to scavenge free radicals involved in initiation of lippid peroxidation, which shows that this root has a good anti-oxidant effect.
