Immunity with Ayurveda

Immunity may be natural, acquired , non-specific and specific against all types of diseases microbial or non-microbial. AIDS research reveals that the body’s immune system can sometimes keep the HIV in check and opens up new possibilities for research therapy. Thymus gland is a major player in immunity and produces a hormone that creates disease fighting T cells. Only 40 mg of zinc rejuvenates the function of this gland. Some Ayurvedic herbs are known which increase or decrease immunity. These may be taken in the form of powders or as a 50 per cent alcohol extract or as a decoction. The names of these herbs along with the does are given below:

Amla

A doze of 3-6 gm enhances natural killer cell activity and antibody dependent cellular toxicity. It increases life span by 35 per cent.

Ashwangandha

A doze of 3-6 gm root powder is often used. The important constituents of the root induce significant immunosuppressive acativity.

Banslochan

Fine powder in a doze of 1-3 gm acts as an immunostimulant

Brahmi

It has an immunopotentaing effect, when used 3 gm\day in three divided dozes. It increases memory, sleep, appetite, breath holding time, delays mental fatigue, reduces cholesterol and relieves anxiety. According to Ayurveda it is cool in its effect, therefore lowers the heat induced by the vitiated Pita, and cures Pittaja ailments.

Gaduchi

A doze of 1-3 gm help in immunotherapeutic modifications of abdominal poisoning due to bacteria (sepsis). It decreases the renal damage. Pre-treatment with this herb reduces mortality rate.

Kalmegh

A doze of 250-500 mg is immunostimulant, and significantly stimulates the production of antibodies.

Keshar

A 100 mg or lower dozes increase the life span.

Neem Bark

1-2 gm of it significantly boosts body’s defense against diseases.

Salai Guggal

1-2 gm gum increase the body weight, total leukocyte ckount and has significant immunomodulator activity without immunosuppression effects.

Shatawari

It has immunopotentiating property, when used 3 gm three times a day for three months.

Tulsi

A dose of 1-2 gm has immunosuppressive property and modifies host resistance to allergic reactions and stress induced changes.

Vidari kand

A doze of 3-6 gm is immunostimulant. It increases strength powder and sexual capacity.
