It is disturbance of enteric functions, mal absorption or excessive secreation. It may be due to infection, improper or overeating of food or some deficiency in spleen. Dysentery is mainly of two types bacillary and amoebic. In acute cases stool with mucus and blood is passed out. When dehydration occurs fluid intake as given under gastroenteritis should be prescribed. Diet should be restricted to rice gruel, yogurt, boiled vegetables, juice and soup. Food items containing fat, protein and spices should be avoided.
The following recipes give relief in this diseases.
(a) One gram of Rasaunt with water may be used thrice daily. Rasaunt can be used in non-specific diarrohoea chronic dysentery, flatulence, irritation of colon and other mucoidal diseases. Berberine contained in Rasaunt has antiprotozoal, antiviral, and leishmanicidal properties. It has shown marked (Page No.31) effectiveness in intestinal and hepatic amoebiasis. It inhibits the intestinal secretion, helps in enlargement of liver and spleen, and also when there is a gripping pain in the joint. Berberine does not interfere with normal intestinal flora and is devoid of side-effects.
(b) In chronic cases, pulverize a mixture of Bilva (10 gm), Rasaunt (5 gm), Kutaj 910 gm), Motha (10 gm), Hara Jangi (10 gm), Gandhak (1 gm), Isphagul 920 gm) and Gond Katira (10 gm). Take 5 gm of this mixture with yogurt till cured.
(c) Take Kutaj (100 gm), and 1 gm each of Majuphal, Laung, Babhitaki, Vavading, Sonth, Pippali, black pepper, Jaiphal, Javitri and Bilva. Makea decoction of Kutaj in 800 ml water, when reduced to one fourth, filter the decoction and mix into it the other pulverised herbs, and heat the whole mass till dry enough to make pills of 2 gm each. Prescribe two pill, three times a day with yogurt. It is very effective in all types of low from alimentary canal.
(d) In simple diarrhoea, pulverize equal quantity of Khairsar, Bilva, Kalmegh, Kutaj, and Daruhaldi. Gie 500 m to 1 mg of this powder depending on the severity of case.
