Obesity :

It may be due to excess of food intake and some abnormality in thebody due to hormones, nervous system or due to faulty salt and water metabolism, which results in the retention of fluids in the tissues. Involvement of a virus for this disease is now being suspected.

Ayurvedic treatment of obesity consists of diet restriction to reduce number of calories, increase in intake of fruits and vegetables diet to have maximum roughage and fibers, and modest exercise to burn excess of fat from the body. Administration of diuretics, and various herbal formulations which metabolise the excess of fat from the body and do not allow their deposition, help is some cases.

Never take the preparations, which cause sudden loss of weight, because then the body has tendency to gain it immediately. The weight loss should be brought about by very serious and consistent efforts. About 500 gm weight loss for a week is preferable but if loss is more than one kg then the body is losing water and not the fat. For a weight loss of 15 kg mostly fat tissues a period of 8-10 months is required.

The treatment includes the following recipes, three times a day with water. The patient is advised not to or drink water meals but before or after one hour of the meal.

(a) Take Chirtrak 1-3 gram with honey.
(Caution: Use Chitrak with care it may cause respiratory and heart problems)
(b) Take 1 gm mixture of Triphala and Guggal with 500 gm Shilajit.
(c) Take appetite suppressants like Kuth, Pushkarmul, chicory and ginger. Pulverise equal quantities of these and take 1 gm of this mixture one hour before meal. Inulin contained in these herbs increases fecal matter and keeps bacterial ecology of colon in proper form.
(d) Pulverize Trikatu 30 gm and 10 gm each of Triphala, Chitrak, black salt, and Babuchi. Dose 1 gm with water three times a day.
(e) To increase the metabolic rate, take with yogurt 1 gm mixture made from equal quantities of Chirtrak, Peepali and Bilva.
(f) Mix 20 gm of Sali Guggal in 100 ml castor oil. Keep at worm place and massage this oil briskly all over the body, particularly at the places, where there is fatty deposition.
(g) Gurmar hinders the absorption of carbohydrates and helps in weight loss. Take 1-2 gm of herb with water.
(h) Use green tea in the form of capsules (500 mg) or as tea.
(i) Pulverized Motha (1 gm) twice daily resulted in significant reduction in the body weight, blood pressure and appetite in obese patients.
(j) Pulverize 45 gm processed Guggal, and 1 gm each of Sonth, Sheetal chini, Triphala, Trikatu and Vavading. Dose 500 mg three times with waer.
(k) Guar gum (15 gm) per day for six weeks reduces cholesterol significantly in overweigth persons.
(l) Triushand Lauth: Pulverize equal quantities of Sonth, Kali Mirch, Pippali, Triphala, Chava, Chitrak, Sambhar Namak, Pahari Namak, Kala Namak, Babuchi and Lauha Bhasam. Dose One gm twice a day. It metabolises fat from the body, and prevents its further deposition resulting in a body with all muscles and no fat; For additional benefits use Medohar Guggal and Shilajit Vati along with this preparation.
