Ulcers
These probably develop due to digestive action of highly acidic gastric
juice on a part of stomach, due to anemia, trauma, stress, but recently
a bacteria Helicobactor pylori has been associated with it. Emotional
strain and overwork are important factors to be considered. It is common
in worriers, the excitable and emotional type of person. Ulcer due to
stress is well documeneted and usually adaptogenic herbs show good effect.
Studies have revealed an affinity of rice with ulceration. Wheat has protective
effect against peptic ulcer, probably because of mucin.
The patient of ulcer should have complete rest, a mixture of white of
an egg cooked in ghee should be administered, an soda bicarbonate be given
in drinking water. Give pulp of fruits and vegetables with a minimum of
roughage, along with the following herbs with water :
(a) As an intestinal antiseptic and for inflammation of intestine: Take
500 gm each Guggal and Mussabar (Alua).
(b) For cytoprotection of mucosa and neutralization of excess of acid
give 1 gm each of Shatawari and Vibhitaki with water.
(c) For ulcer andnon ulcer, imperfect digestion: First week take 10 gm
Amla in three doses, followed by 5 gm in two doses, till cured.
(d) For general treatment take 1 gm each of Sonth (ginger) and Dalchini
(cinnamon). This mixture also prevents ulcer, if detected at the initial
stages.
(e) For relief in pain, healing (coagulation of blood), and neutralization
of acid, take 10 gm powder of Bhringraja thrice daily.
(f) For protection against ulcer, for gastro-intestinal motility and for
secretion of bile, take Kuth 1 gm with water three times daily.
(g) As an antioxidant in early stages of ulcer (preulceroginic stages),
Kutaki 1 gm is effective. It has a cytoprotective effect also.
(h) Pulverize and mix Dalchini 10 gm, Neem bark 1 gm, Vach 1 gm, Amla
5 gm, Khairsar 2 gm, and Triphala 2 gm. Take 1 gram of this powder with
Gulukand three times a day.
(i) Pippali inhibits ulcer significantly, and protects gastric mucosa.
(j) Tulsi in the form of tea is effective if ulcer has developed due to
stress because of physical, chemical or biological causes. It also helps
in peptic ulcer, hypertension, colitis and in post operative complications.
(k) Guar gum inhibits gastric secretion, and protects gastric mucosa but
it should be taken in capsules. The powder is very sticky and may choke
the respiratory passage. It does not readily dissolve in water. This gum
can be used for weight reduction in obesity also.
(l) Brahmi when given in peptic ulcer (both gastric and deuodenal) exhibits
definite improvement in symptoms and healing.
(m) Kalmegh reduces the gastric secretion, total and free acids and helps
in aspirin and histamine induced ulcer. The anti-ulcer effect is due to
anti-secretary, and direct protective effect on the gastric mucosa, and
has probably histamine blocking activity.
