Ayurvedic Remedies for Constipation :
Ayurvedic remedies for constipation
Most of the commercial Ayurvedic purgatives contain drastic herbs like
Jamalgota, Kala Dana, Halap, Indrayan or Tumba, which are not only strong
in action but are also habit forming. The use of these preparations should
be avoided and following recipes containing only mild herbs should be
used.
(a) Take one teaspoon of bulk laxatives like Isphagul and Gond Katira,
dispersed in water.
(b) Take castor oil (one teaspoon with milk) or one teaspoon almond oil
only, if constipation is due to dryness of alimentary canal.
(c) Triphala 5-10gm with milk also helps.
(d) For weak and old patients Gulukand or Murabba figs, prunes, and other
fibrous material as much as they can eat. Gulukand is a mild laxative,
aperient, liver and stomach tonic. It improves the digestive power and
strengthens the heart. All these effects are due to red pigment (flavonoids)
contained in the rose petals, which in recent times have been found to
be good antioxidant. Gulukand should be prepared by immersing petals of
unopened rose flowers in the morning in minimum quantity of sugar syrup.
(e) Take Senna 5 gm with coriander 1 gm.
(f) Compound Seena powder.
i. Mix fine powders of 180 gm Senna, 236 gm Mulathi, 80 gm Gandhak, 4
gm Saunf oil or anise oil, and sugar 1 kg (optional). Dose 4 gm when with
sugar, 1 to 1.5gm when without sugar.
ii. Take Senna 10 gm, Dhania 4 gm, Anjir 16 gm, Imli 12 gm, Amaltas pulp
12 gm, dry plum 8 gm, Mulathi extract 15 gm, sugar 40 gm (optional). Mix
all of these items and use half to one teaspoon before retiring.
This is a pleasant tasting preparation and is so mild that it can be given
to children and elderly persons where a tolerably active purgative is
required. Senna is a best known cathartic. It acts on the intestine without
(Page No.33) affecting the function of stomach and duodenum. It is not
habit forming and is activated in the large intestine only, where it helps
in the formation of soft fecal matter. Amaltas is also a mild cathartic,
which potentiates the effect of Senna. Dhania imparts a fine flavour,
andavoids the gripping effect of Senna. Imli is a good carminative, whereas
fig and plum is mild laxative. Plum helps when feces forms hard lump.
It contains malic acid and pectine. Fig is mucilaginous, sweeth, causes
copious bowel movement. It contains a galaxy of proteolytic enzymes, which
are capable of dissolving proteins.
