Ayurveda Herbs for Old Age

Growing old happens in the mind, reshaping of ageing process in within our control

Ageing is hastened, when cells of our body are permanently damaged by free radicals. Ageing has also been defined as the gradual decrease in the ability of an organism to adapt itself to the environmental changes. The decreased adaptation increases the probability of death with passage of time. With age the body undergoes various biochemical changes, which are inevitable consequence of ageing. During this stage more of homocysteine is produced, which lead to more blood clot and more heart attacks. People age because a master gland, the pineal body, loses its functional capacity. It calcifies, decreases in size and loses the ability to produce a key hormone melatonin. With pineal decline, people are programmed to age. Ageing alters the structure of connective tissues and reduces the resilience and elasticity of arteries and veins, which in turn results in cardiovascular and cerebrovascular diseases, change in hormonal levels, sensory perception particularly hearing and sight, memory and intellectual capacity. Old age impairs the functions of kidney and other internal organs, bones become brittle, and autoimmune diseases become very common. The diseases responsible for maximum deaths and disability during the long life are high blood pressure, heart attack, brain stroke due to insufficient supply of blood to brain, cancer, diabetes, obesity, alcohol caused diseases and lack of immunity.
Death may not be as frightening as the debilitating effects of ageing that threatens to degrade the quality of life. If proper care is taken young can be kept young and the middle aged and the old returned to a far more youthful vitality and appearance. The ultimate would not be to stretch out lifespan by retarding the ageing process, but specifically to prevent the onset of innumerable debility diseases of old age. Life style has a very profound effect on ageing. It includes nutrition, physical activity and role of mind. Both malnutrition and over nutrition adversely affect longevity. Rich diets often result in poor health. Excess intake of calories, and four whites: white fat (saturated fats of animal origin), white flour (refined cereals), white sugar and white salt are the main culprits. Obesity is largely due to excess of food intake, alone or in combination with excess of alcohol and salt intake. Obesity results in high blood pressure, which is major factor for heart attacks and strokes. Negative emotions like greed, anger and too much materialistic attachment result in high blood pressure. Selfless service has a beneficial effect on heart function and prevents upsurge in blood pressure. Music, meditation and yogic practice help in setting the mind. A physically busy life and a peaceful mind have a bigger role to play in our life style. To protect heart and attached arteries, you must avoid all that cause mental affliction. Lack of control of the mind is the main cause of untimely death. Anxiety, anger and depression may cause the body to release cortisol-one of the stress hormones, which can eventually damage the brain. Depression or stress disorders cause shrinkage of brain, hippocampus which in turn causes memory problems. Chronic stress harms brain by raising blood pressure.
For help in old age, there is a special group of herbs in Ayurveda called Rasayana. These herbs not only prolong age but also slow down the process of ageing to avoid degenerative changes. Rasayana herbs ring about balance in physiology of the body, calm the mind, enhance immunity and retard ageing. They have fourfold action:
(a) Vya Sathapna: attainment of healthful longevity or conquering senility.
(b) Ayu Balkar: having anabolic properties.
(c) Medha Balkar: improvement of mental faculties
(d) Roga Haran or Vyadhi Nasha: gaining immunity and destruction of any existing disease.

These herbs have a special significance these days, when population of senior citizens is expanding rapidly, and the healthcare expenditure, as per one survey, increases by 39 per cent after the age of 55. Many people (47 per cent) think that healthcare plans in USA are more concerned about making money than providing care. Surveys have also shown that 74.4 million Americans are more likely to treat themselves first with herbal remedies (Herbalgram N0 48.P.65). It has been seen that aspirin and other non-steroidal anti-inflammatory agents, some herbs and vitamin E reduce the risk of mental decline in old age by 20 per cent. Brain changes throughout life. It is actually possible to grow new brain cells and rejuvenate the dormant ones. The type of food and the other activities have a remarkable effect on brain in old age. Social persons are more active than sedentary ones. Exercise increases the delivery of oxygenated blood to the brain.
Note: It appears that Sheesh Asan enhances the blood supply to the brain.
