Commonly used Ayurvedic Remedies for Respiratory Diseases
(a)
Guggal gum dissolves sputum and clears throat, 5 gm of it may be chewed.
(b) Kantkari, the decoction of the herb or fumes from the fruit are used.
The decoction of kantakari 60-200ml a day orally, diminished the intensity
of dyspnea, gave relief in cough and reduce the amount of sputum.
(c) Kulanjan, small chips of the root are chewed or powder is mixed in
honey and licked.
(d) Kutaki (500 mg –1 gm) because of its autoimmune effect has been
found effective in asthma. (Page No. 51)
(e) Kuth, smoke the whole root or use powder macerated in alcohol or take
1 gm of root powder, relaxes respiratory tubules. After use of 10-15 days,
stop this medication to see whether the attack recurs or not. Start again
if required.
(f) Mulathi is mainly used for bronchial troubles all over the world.
It is demulcent, pectoral, emollient, helps in cough and chest afflictions.
It is an anti-inflammatory, gives relief in the irritable condition of
bronchiole tubules. It is one of the Rasayana herbs of Ayurveda. Ancient
Chinese considered that it strengthens the muscles and bones. Note: use
with care, it could cause potassium depletion.
(g) Mushkafoor (camphor) is a good antiseptic, antispasmodic, counter-irritant
and sedative.
(h) Naushadar (ammonium chloride) has an expectorant and marked stimulating
action on the mucus membrane. It is invaluable in catarrh, chronic pharyngitis
with mucus secretion and whooping cough. It is valuable when compounded
with extract of Mulathi.
(i) Pippali is smooth muscle relaxant, respiratory stimulant, antiallergic
and protects from attack of asthma. It induces natural resistance against
diseases. It can be safely used as an anti-allergic agent for the bronchial
attack in children. The essential oil has a strong anti-microbial effect.
It has a marked effect on suppression of cilliary movement and is a medullary
stimulant.
(j) Shirish: The decotion of the bark has found to relieve dyspnea (difficult
breathing accompaniedby pain)and cough. (Page No.52) it increases breath
holding time, and vital capacity. The response is excellent in cases of
asthma of less than two years old. It inhibits the initial process of
sensitization and suppresses T lymphocyte activity and antibodies.
